The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) is an interdisciplinary higher education and knowledge institution focused on the equitable, sustainable and efficient transformation of India's cities, towns and villages. Headquartered in Bengaluru, IIHS brings together teaching, research, practice and capacity development to address complex challenges associated with urbanisation, infrastructure, governance, environment, climate change, human development and sustainable settlements. IIHS was established with a distinctive vision of creating a new interdisciplinary knowledge institution for India, bringing together professionals, researchers, educators and practitioners from diverse fields. Its academic approach moves beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries and connects areas such as urban science, sustainability science, climate science, governance, economics, human development, infrastructure and systems. In February 2025, the Ministry of Education, Government of India, on the advice of the University Grants Commission, declared Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), Bengaluru, along with IIHS Kengeri as its constituent unit, an Institution Deemed to be University under the Distinct Category under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The IIHS University was subsequently launched as a distinct interdisciplinary university focused on urban research, education and practice. The university offers interdisciplinary Master's programmes and doctoral-level education centred around urbanisation, sustainability, climate, infrastructure, governance and related areas. Its academic model combines classroom learning with research, field engagement, applied projects and professional practice, giving students opportunities to understand and address real-world challenges facing Indian settlements. IIHS operates across multiple locations in Bengaluru. Its Sadashivanagar campus provides learning, research, conference and collaboration facilities, while the Kengeri campus is being developed as a 54-acre integrated and sustainable residential campus. The Kengeri campus is designed around principles of ecological sustainability, climate resilience, resource efficiency and interdisciplinary learning and is intended to serve as a major centre for urban ecological and sustainability research. The institute also operates specialised laboratories including Geospatial, Internet of Things, Media, Sustainable Energy, Urban Informatics and Environmental Labs. These facilities support experimentation, applied research, technological innovation and methodological development across different dimensions of human settlements. For students interested in urban development, sustainability, climate change, infrastructure, governance, human development and interdisciplinary research, IIHS offers a distinctive academic environment that combines theory with practice. Its focus on India's rapidly changing urban landscape and its integration of education, research and professional practice make it a unique higher education institution in Karnataka and India.
