The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is one of India's premier institutions for advanced scientific and technological research and education, located in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Established on 27 May 1909 through the vision of industrialist Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, with support from the Maharaja of Mysore and the Government of India, IISc has played a pioneering role in the development of scientific research and higher education in the country for more than a century. IISc has a distinctive academic structure centred on advanced research, interdisciplinary education and innovation across science and engineering. Its academic and research activities span areas including biological sciences, chemical sciences, electrical, electronic and computer sciences, mechanical sciences, physical and mathematical sciences and interdisciplinary research. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and research programmes, providing students and scholars with opportunities to work on fundamental as well as applied research problems. The institute has a strong research ecosystem supported by specialised laboratories, research centres, advanced facilities and collaborations with academic institutions, industry and government organisations. Research at IISc addresses areas ranging from artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, materials, energy, climate and sustainability to biotechnology, healthcare, aerospace, robotics and advanced engineering. The main IISc campus is located in north Bengaluru and provides an extensive academic and residential environment with departments, laboratories, libraries, student facilities, hostels, sports infrastructure and research centres. The institute also has the Challakere campus in Karnataka, which supports educational and research initiatives and contributes to IISc's broader institutional development. IISc was selected as an Institution of Eminence (IoE) by the Government of India in 2018, enabling the institute to pursue ambitious initiatives in frontier research, innovation, infrastructure development and internationalisation. Its academic environment attracts students, faculty members and researchers from India and around the world. The institute has consistently performed strongly in national and international assessments. In NIRF 2025, IISc was ranked 1st in the University category and 1st in the Research category, while it secured 2nd position in the Overall category and 3rd in the Innovation category. These results reflect its strong emphasis on advanced research, scientific excellence and knowledge creation. For students interested in science, engineering, technology and research, the Indian Institute of Science provides an academically rigorous environment with strong opportunities for advanced learning and research. Its century-long legacy, research infrastructure, distinguished faculty and focus on frontier scientific and technological problems make IISc one of the most important higher education and research institutions in India.
