Karnataka Veterinary, Animal & Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU) is a specialized State Public University headquartered at Nandinagar, Bidar, Karnataka. The university was established through the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries University Act, 2004, enacted as Karnataka Act No. 9 of 2004 and published in the Karnataka Gazette on 23 February 2004. The university commenced its operations from 1 April 2005 with the objective of strengthening education, research, extension and technology transfer in veterinary, animal, dairy and fisheries sciences across Karnataka. KVAFSU has a distinctive academic and research mandate focused on areas that directly support livestock, dairy, fisheries and rural development. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and diploma programmes in disciplines including Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Fisheries Science, Dairy Technology, Animal Science and related fields. Its academic ecosystem includes constituent colleges and specialized institutions located across different parts of Karnataka, providing students with opportunities for classroom learning, laboratory training, clinical education, field exposure and research. The university's research activities address important areas such as animal health, livestock production, veterinary medicine, animal nutrition, dairy technology, fisheries, aquaculture, biotechnology and rural-oriented technologies. KVAFSU also undertakes extension activities through training programmes, seminars, workshops, farmer-oriented initiatives and technology transfer, helping connect scientific research with the needs of farming and rural communities. Its constituent institutions include veterinary colleges in Bengaluru, Bidar, Hassan and Shivamogga, the College of Fisheries at Mangaluru and institutions focused on animal husbandry and dairy science. Through education, research, clinical services and extension programmes, KVAFSU contributes to livestock development, food security, rural livelihoods and the growth of the animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries sectors in Karnataka.
