Mahatma Gandhi Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University (MGRDPRU) is a state public university located in Gadag, Karnataka, established under the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University Act, 2016. The Act came into force with effect from 21 May 2016, and the university began its academic programmes from the 2017–18 academic year. The institution was established with a distinctive focus on rural development, Panchayat Raj institutions, local self-governance, sustainable development, community participation and capacity building. The university was envisioned to create dedicated and professionally trained human resources capable of addressing the social, economic and administrative challenges faced by rural communities. Its academic and research activities are closely connected with rural development, governance, public administration, social sciences, management, agriculture-related areas, skill development and other disciplines supporting inclusive and sustainable development. MGRDPRU follows a unitary university model and emphasizes teaching, training, research, field work, extension activities and collaboration with government departments and community organizations. Its programmes include undergraduate, postgraduate, postgraduate diploma, diploma and certificate courses. The university also undertakes research, monitoring and evaluation of rural development programmes and works toward strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions and local governance. The university's academic philosophy draws inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi's vision of Gram Swaraj and seeks to connect higher education with practical rural transformation. Its campus and academic initiatives are designed to encourage community engagement, entrepreneurship, employability, innovation and sustainable development. The university has also developed facilities and initiatives supporting rural immersion, skill development, research and extension activities. In 2025, the Karnataka State Legislature amended the university's Act and formally substituted the earlier name "Karnataka State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University" with "Mahatma Gandhi Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University." The institution continues to serve as a specialized centre for education, research and training related to rural development and Panchayat Raj in Karnataka.
