The University of Mysore is a historic State Public University located in Mysuru, Karnataka, established on 27 July 1916. It is the first university established in the state of Karnataka and one of the oldest universities in India. The university was founded during the reign of Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV with the support of Sir M. Visvesvaraya and was established with the vision of developing higher education and intellectual advancement in the erstwhile Mysore State. The university has grown into a multidisciplinary centre for higher education, research and innovation, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma and certificate programmes across a wide range of academic disciplines. Its academic structure includes faculties and departments covering Arts, Science and Technology, Commerce, Education, Law and other interdisciplinary areas. The University of Mysore is particularly recognized for its postgraduate education and research ecosystem. Its main postgraduate campus, Manasagangotri, houses numerous academic departments, research centres, libraries, laboratories and student facilities. The university also operates through affiliated and constituent institutions across its jurisdiction and supports academic development through teaching, research, extension and community-oriented programmes. Research is an important part of the university's academic mission, with scholars working in areas ranging from physical and natural sciences to social sciences, humanities, commerce, technology and interdisciplinary studies. The institution also promotes innovation, academic collaboration, conferences, publications and research projects. The University of Mysore has a long record of academic recognition and was the first university to be accredited by NAAC in 2000 with Five Star status. In NIRF 2025, it achieved Rank 71 in the University category and Rank 20 among State Public Universities.
