Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) is a State Health Science University of the Government of Karnataka, headquartered in Bengaluru. The university was established on 1 June 1996 under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Act, 1994, with the objective of bringing health-science institutions across Karnataka under a common academic framework. Its creation was intended to ensure systematic instruction, teaching, training, research and standardized academic evaluation in modern medicine and Indian systems of medicine. RGUHS is a specialized health-sciences university with academic and regulatory responsibilities across a wide range of healthcare disciplines. Its scope includes Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani, Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences, Physiotherapy and Allied Health Sciences. The university works to maintain common academic standards through curriculum development, examinations, evaluation, affiliation and academic oversight. From approximately 210 institutions at its inception, the university has expanded into a large health-science education network covering nearly 1,500 affiliated colleges and institutions across Karnataka. These institutions serve students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and professional programmes in various healthcare disciplines. RGUHS emphasizes quality education, professional competency, research, innovation and public health. Its academic framework supports standardized curricula and examinations while encouraging research publications, academic conferences, student welfare initiatives and community-oriented healthcare programmes. The university also works with statutory and professional regulatory bodies relevant to different health-science disciplines. The university is governed through statutory bodies including the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Registrar (Evaluation), Finance Officer, Syndicate and Senate. Located in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, RGUHS continues to play a central role in Karnataka's healthcare education ecosystem.
