St Joseph’s University (SJU) is a Public-Private-Partnership University located on Lalbagh Road in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Established under the St Joseph’s University Act, 2021 (Karnataka Act No. 24 of 2021), the university received university status on 2 July 2022 and was formally inaugurated on 27 September 2022 by the President of India. The university represents the transformation of the historic St Joseph’s College into a full-fledged university under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) 2.0 initiative. While the university was established in 2022, its educational heritage dates back to 1882, giving the institution a long-standing academic tradition in Bengaluru. St Joseph’s University follows the Jesuit educational tradition, combining academic excellence with intellectual development, ethical values, social responsibility, service and holistic formation. The university seeks to develop students who are academically capable, socially conscious, professionally competent and committed to contributing positively to society. Its educational approach encourages critical thinking, creativity, research, collaboration and experiential learning alongside classroom-based education. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, postgraduate diploma and doctoral programmes across a diverse range of academic disciplines. Its schools and departments cover areas including Business, Chemical Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Languages and Literatures, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Work, Communication and Media Studies, and Information Technology. This multidisciplinary structure provides students with opportunities to explore academic interests across sciences, humanities, commerce, management, technology and social sciences. Research and innovation are important components of the university's academic environment. Students and faculty are encouraged to participate in research projects, conferences, publications, seminars, workshops and interdisciplinary initiatives. The university also promotes internships, industry interaction, community outreach, extension activities and professional development to help students connect academic learning with real-world applications. The university's central Bengaluru campus provides academic and student-support infrastructure including classrooms, laboratories, libraries, research facilities, technology-enabled learning spaces, hostels, sports facilities, cultural spaces and student activity centres. Its location on Lalbagh Road places students within Bengaluru's major academic, business, technology and cultural ecosystem. Student development is further supported through clubs, associations, sports, NSS, NCC, counselling, scholarships and various community engagement initiatives. St Joseph’s University builds upon a rich institutional legacy. The predecessor St Joseph’s College was founded in 1882 and was entrusted to the Jesuits in 1937. It became the first affiliated college in Karnataka to offer postgraduate programmes in 1986 and established a research centre in 1988. The institution later received academic autonomy and continued to expand its academic and research activities before attaining university status in 2022. Today, St Joseph’s University combines this historic educational heritage with a modern multidisciplinary university structure. With its emphasis on Jesuit values, academic diversity, research, innovation, professional development and socially responsible education, the university provides students with a comprehensive higher education environment in Bengaluru.
