The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore (UAS Bangalore) is a State Public University and one of India's prominent institutions dedicated to agricultural education, research and extension. The university was officially established in 1964 under the University of Agricultural Sciences Act passed by the then Government of Mysore. Its formal history can be traced to the establishment of an agricultural research farm at Hebbal in 1899, followed by the Agricultural School in 1913 and the Agriculture College in 1946. The university was inaugurated by Dr. Zakir Hussain, then Vice-President of India, on 21 August 1964. UAS Bangalore has played an important role in the development of agricultural education and research in Karnataka. Its academic and research activities cover agriculture and several allied disciplines, including agricultural engineering, biotechnology, food technology, sericulture, agri-business management, food and nutrition, agricultural sciences and other specialised areas. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes and provides students with opportunities for classroom learning, laboratory training, field-based education, research projects and practical agricultural experience. Research is one of the core pillars of UAS Bangalore. The university operates research stations and specialised centres that work on crop improvement, soil science, plant protection, biotechnology, agricultural engineering, horticulture, natural resource management, food technology, climate-resilient agriculture and other areas relevant to farming and rural development. Research findings and technologies developed by the university are disseminated to farmers and agricultural stakeholders through its extensive extension network. Extension education is another major strength of UAS Bangalore. The university works with farming communities through Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Extension Education Units, agricultural technology programmes, demonstrations, training sessions, farmer interactions and other knowledge-transfer initiatives. These activities help translate scientific research into practical agricultural technologies and support farmers in improving productivity, sustainability and farm management practices. The university's major academic and research infrastructure includes the Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra (GKVK) campus in Bengaluru, which is a large green and biodiversity-rich campus and an important centre for agricultural education and research. UAS Bangalore has colleges, research stations, extension centres and affiliated institutions serving the agricultural needs of southern Karnataka. Its geographical jurisdiction covers several districts and enables the university to address diverse agro-climatic and farming conditions. UAS Bangalore provides students with modern academic facilities including laboratories, libraries, experimental farms, research infrastructure, classrooms, hostels, sports facilities and other student-support services. The university also promotes entrepreneurship, innovation, skill development, community engagement and industry interaction, helping students develop both academic knowledge and practical professional capabilities. The university has received significant national recognition for its contributions to agricultural education and research. UAS Bangalore is currently accredited with an A+ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for a five-year period effective from 13 February 2025. In the NIRF 2025 rankings, it secured 11th position in the Agriculture and Allied Sectors category, 95th in the Overall category and 37th among State Public Universities. With its long history, extensive research infrastructure, strong agricultural extension network and multidisciplinary academic programmes, the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore continues to contribute to agricultural development, food security, rural livelihoods and sustainable farming in Karnataka and across India.
