The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad (UAS Dharwad) is a State Public University located at Krishi Nagar in Dharwad, Karnataka, dedicated to agricultural education, research and extension. The university was formally established on 1 October 1986 by the Government of Karnataka to address the educational, research and technological needs of the farming community in North Karnataka. Over the years, UAS Dharwad has developed into a major agricultural university with a strong regional presence and an integrated academic and research ecosystem covering agriculture and allied sectors. The university provides undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education in a wide range of agricultural and allied disciplines. Its academic areas include agriculture, agricultural engineering, horticulture, forestry, food technology, biotechnology, agricultural economics, agribusiness, agricultural sciences and other specialised fields associated with farming and rural development. Through its constituent colleges and research institutions, the university provides students with opportunities to combine classroom education with laboratory work, field-based learning, farm experiments, research projects and practical agricultural training. Research is one of the major pillars of UAS Dharwad. The university operates an extensive network of research stations working on crops and agricultural challenges relevant to northern Karnataka and other agro-climatic regions. Research activities cover crop improvement, soil science, plant protection, horticulture, agricultural engineering, biotechnology, natural resource management, farm mechanisation, climate-resilient agriculture and post-harvest technologies. The university has contributed significantly to the development and dissemination of improved agricultural technologies and crop varieties suited to local farming conditions. Extension education is another important component of the university's activities. UAS Dharwad works directly with farmers and rural communities through Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Extension Education Units, the Agricultural Technology Information Centre and other technology-transfer initiatives. These centres organise farmer training programmes, demonstrations, field trials, exhibitions, Krishi Melas and awareness programmes designed to communicate scientific agricultural practices and research findings to farming communities. The university also operates the Krishi Community Radio Station, which provides location-specific agricultural information to farmers. UAS Dharwad currently has five colleges, a network of research stations, Extension Education Units, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and an Agricultural Technology Information Centre. Its jurisdiction covers several districts of northern Karnataka, including Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, Bagalkot and Vijayapura. The university's regional focus enables it to address diverse agricultural conditions ranging from dry farming to irrigated and high-rainfall systems. The university provides students and researchers with academic infrastructure including laboratories, libraries, experimental farms, research facilities, classrooms, hostels, sports facilities and other student-support amenities. Its academic environment encourages innovation, entrepreneurship, interdisciplinary research and collaboration with government departments, agricultural organisations, industries, farmers and national and international research institutions. UAS Dharwad has received recognition for its contributions to agricultural education, research and extension and participates in national agricultural research and education programmes. It was ranked 35th in the NIRF 2025 Agriculture and Allied Sectors category, demonstrating its position among India's leading institutions in the field. With its integrated approach to education, research and extension, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad plays an important role in agricultural development in Karnataka. The university continues to focus on developing skilled agricultural professionals, generating region-specific technologies, supporting farmers and contributing to sustainable and productive agriculture.
