The University of Agricultural Sciences, Mandya (UAS Mandya) is a State Public University established at the historic Vishweshwaraiah Canal (V.C.) Farm in Mandya, Karnataka, with a focus on agricultural education, research, innovation and extension. The university was formally established by the Government of Karnataka on 24 April 2025 under the Universities of Agricultural Sciences framework, marking an important milestone in strengthening agricultural higher education and research in the Old Mysuru region. Although the university is new, its academic foundation is rooted in the long-standing agricultural activities of the V.C. Farm and the College of Agriculture, Mandya, whose foundation stone was laid in 1991. UAS Mandya was created to provide a dedicated agricultural university for the districts of Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Chamarajanagar and Kodagu. Its jurisdiction brings together important agricultural, horticultural and forestry institutions from the region, creating an integrated ecosystem for education, research and extension. The university brings together the College of Agriculture at Mandya, College of Agriculture at Hassan, College of Agriculture at Chamarajanagar, College of Forestry at Ponnampet and the College of Horticultural Sciences at Mysuru under a common academic and research framework. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and doctoral-level programmes across agriculture and allied disciplines. Current academic programmes include B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture, B.Sc. (Hons.) Natural Farming, B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry, B.Tech. Biotechnology, B.Tech. Food Technology and specialised postgraduate programmes in areas such as Agronomy, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Agricultural Entomology, Soil Science, Plant Pathology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Silviculture and Agroforestry, Forest Biology and Tree Improvement, Forest Resource Management and Forest Production and Utilization. Research is a central component of UAS Mandya's academic mission. The university's research activities are intended to address regional agricultural challenges, improve crop productivity, promote sustainable farming practices and develop technologies suitable for the diverse agro-climatic conditions of southern Karnataka. The university's V.C. Farm campus includes agricultural education, research and extension activities, with approximately 650 acres of land supporting field-based experimentation and agricultural development. Extension education is another important area of the university's work. Through Krishi Vigyan Kendras, extension centres, demonstrations, farmer training programmes and technology-transfer initiatives, UAS Mandya aims to connect agricultural research with farming communities. The university's regional focus allows it to work closely with farmers, rural youth, government departments and other agricultural stakeholders to promote scientific farming, natural farming, sustainable resource management and improved rural livelihoods. The university is also developing its academic infrastructure and institutional capacity as a new agricultural university. Its programmes combine classroom instruction with laboratory work, field experiments, practical training, research exposure and community-oriented agricultural activities. By bringing agriculture, horticulture, forestry, food technology, biotechnology and related disciplines together, UAS Mandya is positioned to support multidisciplinary approaches to modern agriculture. With its strategic location at V.C. Farm, Mandya and its jurisdiction covering five districts of southern Karnataka, the University of Agricultural Sciences, Mandya is expected to play an important role in strengthening agricultural education, research, innovation and farmer-oriented extension services in the region. Its long-standing agricultural institutions provide an established academic foundation, while its new university structure creates opportunities for expanded research, modern agricultural technologies, sustainable farming practices and skill development for the next generation of agricultural professionals.
