The University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur (UAS Raichur) is a State Public University dedicated to agricultural education, research and extension in the north-eastern region of Karnataka. Established in 2009 by the Government of Karnataka following the reorganization of the jurisdiction of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, the university was created to provide focused agricultural education and research facilities suited to the distinctive agro-climatic conditions of the region. Its headquarters are located at Raichur, Karnataka, and its academic and research activities extend across several districts of north-eastern Karnataka. UAS Raichur offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education in agriculture and allied disciplines. Its academic programmes cover areas such as agricultural sciences, horticulture, agricultural engineering, food technology, biotechnology, agribusiness and other specialised fields associated with modern agriculture and rural development. The university combines classroom education with laboratory training, field-based learning, experimental farm activities, research projects and practical exposure to agricultural technologies. Research is a central component of the university's mission. UAS Raichur undertakes research addressing regional agricultural challenges, including crop improvement, soil and water management, plant protection, agricultural engineering, horticulture, biotechnology, natural resource management, farm mechanisation and climate-resilient agriculture. Research programmes are designed to develop technologies and practices appropriate for the semi-arid and dryland farming conditions prevalent across much of the university's jurisdiction. The university also places significant emphasis on agricultural extension and technology transfer. Through its extension centres, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, research stations, farmer training programmes, demonstrations, field days and other outreach initiatives, UAS Raichur works to connect scientific research with farming communities. These activities support farmers in adopting improved crop production practices, efficient resource management, modern agricultural technologies and sustainable farming methods. UAS Raichur's academic ecosystem includes colleges, research stations and extension facilities distributed across its jurisdiction. The university provides students and researchers with laboratories, libraries, experimental farms, classrooms, hostels, sports facilities and other academic and student-support infrastructure. Practical training and field exposure are particularly important components of agricultural education, enabling students to understand real-world farming systems and rural development challenges. The university's regional focus allows it to address agricultural issues specific to north-eastern Karnataka, including water management, dryland agriculture, crop diversification, soil health, climate variability and the development of technologies suitable for local farming communities. Collaboration with government departments, agricultural organisations, farmers, industries and research institutions further supports its education, research and extension activities. UAS Raichur participates in the National Institutional Ranking Framework's Agriculture and Allied Sectors category, reflecting its role within India's agricultural higher education and research ecosystem. The university also submits institutional data covering undergraduate and postgraduate education, faculty, research, placements and other academic activities for national assessment and ranking processes. With its integrated focus on education, research and agricultural extension, the University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur contributes to the development of skilled agricultural professionals, region-specific technologies and sustainable farming practices. The university continues to support agricultural innovation, rural development and the advancement of farming communities across northern Karnataka.
