The University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot (UHS Bagalkot) is a State Public University dedicated to higher education, research and extension in horticulture and allied sciences. Established on 22 November 2008 by the Government of Karnataka, the university was created to strengthen horticultural education and research in a state that has a major role in India's production of fruits, vegetables, flowers, plantation crops, spices, medicinal plants and other horticultural commodities. With its headquarters at Bagalkot, the university has developed a specialised academic and research ecosystem focused on addressing the needs of horticulture farmers, entrepreneurs, researchers and the wider agricultural sector. UHS Bagalkot provides undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education in horticulture and allied disciplines. Its academic programmes cover areas such as horticulture, agricultural sciences, horticultural engineering, food technology, biotechnology, plant breeding and genetics, plant protection, soil science, agricultural economics and other disciplines associated with production, processing, management and marketing of horticultural crops. Students receive a combination of classroom instruction, laboratory training, field-based learning, practical demonstrations and research exposure. Research is one of the central pillars of the university. UHS Bagalkot conducts research on fruits, vegetables, flowers, plantation crops, spices, medicinal and aromatic plants and other horticultural commodities. Its research activities address crop improvement, production technologies, pest and disease management, soil and water management, post-harvest technology, processing, biotechnology, protected cultivation, natural resource management and climate-resilient horticulture. The university's research centres are distributed across different agro-climatic regions of Karnataka, allowing researchers to develop technologies suited to diverse horticultural conditions. The university also has a strong agricultural and horticultural extension mandate. Through Horticulture Extension Education Units, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, research and extension centres, demonstrations, farmer training programmes, field days and technology-transfer initiatives, UHS Bagalkot works directly with farming communities. These activities help disseminate improved crop production practices, planting material, post-harvest technologies, sustainable farming methods and other innovations developed through university research. UHS Bagalkot has developed a wide institutional network consisting of colleges, horticultural research and extension centres and horticulture extension education units. Its academic ecosystem extends across several regions of Karnataka, providing students and researchers with opportunities for practical field exposure and region-specific research. The university also promotes entrepreneurship, value addition, food processing, agribusiness and commercialisation of horticultural technologies to support the economic development of the horticulture sector. The university's main campus at Udyanagiri, Navanagar, Bagalkot provides academic and student-support facilities including classrooms, laboratories, libraries, research infrastructure, experimental farms, hostels and other amenities. Its constituent colleges and research centres further strengthen its capacity for specialised education and field-based research. The University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot participates in the National Institutional Ranking Framework's Agriculture and Allied Sectors category, placing it within India's national agricultural higher education and research ecosystem. Its specialised focus on horticulture gives the university an important role in developing skilled professionals, improved crop technologies, sustainable production systems and farmer-oriented innovations. With its specialised academic programmes, extensive research network, strong extension activities and focus on horticultural innovation, UHS Bagalkot continues to contribute to the development of Karnataka's horticulture sector. The university combines higher education, scientific research, technology transfer and entrepreneurship to support farmers, industry and future horticultural professionals.
