Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is a State Public University of the Government of Karnataka and one of India's largest technological universities, with its headquarters at Jnana Sangama, Belagavi. Established on 1 April 1998 under the Visvesvaraya Technological University Act, 1994, the university was created to bring greater coordination and uniformity to technical education across Karnataka. Named after Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, one of India's most distinguished engineers and statesmen, VTU has grown into a major centre for engineering, technology, management education, research and innovation. VTU has statewide jurisdiction and plays a central role in the academic administration of engineering education in Karnataka. The university brings together affiliated, constituent and autonomous institutions under its academic framework and provides academic regulations, curricula, examinations, affiliation and other university-level services. Its extensive network has helped establish common academic standards across technical institutions throughout the state. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes across a wide range of engineering and technology disciplines. Its academic areas include Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Information Science, Industrial and Production Engineering, Biotechnology, Architecture and several emerging technology fields. VTU also offers postgraduate programmes in engineering, management and computer applications and supports advanced research through its recognised research centres. Research and innovation are important components of VTU's academic mission. VTU operates from its main campus at Jnana Sangama in Belagavi and has regional centres in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburagi and Belagavi to support its statewide academic and administrative activities. In NIRF 2025, VTU was placed in the 151–200 rank band in Engineering and was also included in the University category ranking.
